Do you know which of your emails are actually generating revenue for your business? I mean, really know—not just guessing or hoping.
Here’s the reality: In nearly every email list I’ve analyzed (and I’ve analyzed quite a few), there’s a hidden truth in the data.
It’s called the 80/20 rule of email marketing, and it goes like this:
80% of your email revenue comes from 20% of your emails.
But it gets even more interesting. Often, it’s more like 90/10 or even 95/5.
Before you start feeling like you’ve been wasting your time, let me assure you: You’re not. This is just the nature of email marketing.
Once you understand this rule, you can change your approach. You can stop trying everything and focus on what really works.
### 1. **Segment Your Audience**
Divide your email list into smaller segments based on demographics, behavior, purchase history, or engagement levels. This allows you to send more personalized and relevant content to each group, increasing the likelihood of engagement.
### 2. **Personalize Your Emails**
Go beyond just using the recipient’s name. Tailor the content based on their preferences, past interactions, and purchase history. Personalized emails can significantly boost open and click-through rates.
### 3. **Optimize Subject Lines**
Your subject line is the first thing recipients see. Make it compelling by using curiosity, urgency, or personalization. A/B test different subject lines to see which ones perform best.
### 4. **Use Engaging Pre-Header Text**
The pre-header text is the snippet that follows the subject line. Use it to provide additional context or a teaser to encourage opens. Keep it short and impactful².
### 5. **Craft Strong CTAs (Calls to Action)**
Your CTA should be clear, compelling, and easy to find. Use action-oriented language and make sure it stands out visually. Test different CTAs to see which ones drive the most clicks.
### 6. **Leverage Dynamic Content**
Incorporate dynamic content like personalized product recommendations, countdown timers, or interactive elements. This can make your emails more engaging and relevant to each recipient.
### 7. **Send Welcome Emails**
Welcome emails have higher open rates and set the tone for your relationship with new subscribers. Make sure to include a strong CTA and valuable content to keep them engaged from the start.
### 8. **Conduct A/B Testing**
Regularly test different elements of your emails, such as subject lines, content, images, and CTAs. Use the results to continuously improve your email performance.
### 9. **Ensure Mobile Responsiveness**
A significant portion of emails are opened on mobile devices. Make sure your emails are mobile-friendly with responsive design, easy-to-read text, and tappable buttons.
### 10. **Analyze and Optimize**
Regularly review your email metrics, such as open rates, click-through rates, and conversion rates. Identify patterns and areas for improvement. Use this data to refine your strategy and focus on what works best.
By implementing these strategies, you can enhance your email marketing efforts, drive higher engagement, and ultimately increase your revenue.

Here’s more!
- Analyze Your Data: Dive deep into your email metrics. Look at opens, clicks, and most importantly, revenue generated per email.
- Identify Top Performers: Determine which emails fall into that magical 20% (or 10% or 5%).
- Analyze Key Elements: What sets these emails apart? Is it the subject line, the offer, the timing, or the segment you sent it to?
- Double Down: Once you know what works, do more of it. A lot more.
- Optimize: Those underperforming emails aren’t just failing to make you money—they’re costing you subscribers and engagement. Optimize and improve them.
Now, I know what you’re thinking: “But I can’t just send the same email over and over!”
And you’re right. You can’t.
But you can take what works and create variations.
Apply those winning elements to different offers, segments, and times of the year.
